U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services published a new version of Form I-9 on November 14, 2016. The new version bears an expiration date of 08/31/2019; this will be the only acceptable version for all new hires starting January 22, 2017. The changes in the new form were highlighted in the November 15, 2016, Hot Topics article, New Form I-9 Released. MSEC’s attorneys will also be reviewing these changes during the Basic I-9 Compliance class on January 25, 2017.
The revised I-9 Handbook for Employers is expected to be available on or around January 23, 2017. The Handbook may clarify some lingering questions such as the use of electronic signatures on the new form and the possibility of using P.O. Box information in limited circumstances.
