The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Drug Testing Advisory Board will meet July 26 and July 27 to provide an update on the status of the Mandatory Guidelines for Federal Workplace Drug Testing Programs for urine and oral fluid.
SAMHSA, a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, provides regulations for the administration of drug testing to government employees and to employees whose employers are regulated by government agencies, such as the Department of Transportation (DOT). Since 1988, the DOT has accepted only urinalysis for drug testing purposes. SAMHSA has been evaluating oral fluids testing as an alternative to urinalysis for more than a year.
While employers that are not regulated by a federal agency such as DOT are free to use oral fluids testing, approval from the federal government will likely pave the way for oral fluids testing to eventually supplant urinalysis.
